Why Are Africanized Killer Honey Bees More Aggressive & a Problem in Bernalillo, NM?

According to entomologists, Africanized honey bees otherwise known as killer bees will sting without provocation making them dangerous for homeowners who are unfortunate enough to come in contact with them. If you notice a lot of bee activity around your backyard adhere on the side of caution and contact your knowledgeable Bugman Inc. professional for proper identification and removal. You backyard may have become a home for Africanized honey bees and if you disturb them you run the risk of being attacked by possibly thousands of agitated stinging insects. When killer bees move into attack mode they are both aggressive and relentless and the summer months are when Africanized honey bees are most active.

Where Did Africanized Honey Bees Come From?

The Africanized honey bee is a hybrid of the Western honey bee originally produced by cross-breeding the African honey bee with various European honey bees in order to increase honey production. The Africanized honey bee was first introduced into Brazil in 1956 but by 1957, 26 swarms were inadvertently allowed to escape giving the species an opportunity to rapidly spread throughout South America eventually arriving in North America in 1985.

Why Are Africanized Honey Bees a Problem?

Africanized honey bees are much more defensive than many other bee species, and their reaction time is also much quicker than the more placid European honey bee which is one of the reasons they are much more dangerous. According to the U.S Dept. of Agriculture’s National Invasive Species Africanized bees began appearing in the Southern United States during the early 1990’s. Killer bees have been documented as chasing an individual a quarter of a mile and are responsible for over 1000 human fatalities with victims receiving as many as ten times more stings than other species of bee. Killer bees are also responsible for killing animals including horses.

Why Are Africanized Killer Honey Bees More Aggressive

Entomologists estimate that more than 90% of the honey bee population in Arizona is the Africanized hybrid offspring of bees from South America and the European honey bees that were already residing in the United States. Despite a slight color variation the differences between an Africanized honey bee and a European honey bee are extremely difficult to identify which is what makes them especially dangerous to unsuspecting homeowners. While both bees perform the function of pollinating plants, the nesting and temperament of the Africanized honey bees are what set them apart from other species. Not only are they aggressive, attacking and stinging in large numbers they will continue to chase a perceived threat over a long distance. They are extremely protective and will patrol a large area watching over the hive attacking with very little provocation when they are disturbed. Africanized honey bees can be found in Arizona, California, Texas, Nevada and our home State of New Mexico.

Signs of a Killer Bee Infestation

Africanized honeybees are so similar in appearance to European honeybees it’s definitely not worth the risk if you make a mistake. Be cautious around any unusual holes in the ground especially when mowing or working in the yard. If you live in an area where Africanized honeybees have been documented, avoid the nests and contact your Bugman specialist for immediate control and removal.
