How to Get Rid of Wasp Nests in Walls & Stop Wasps from Coming Back in Espanola, NM

Insects come in all shapes and sizes. Some are completely benign while others are extremely dangerous. Some like to exist in isolation while others prefer groups. Some have only a few variations on the species while others have hundreds of variations. Some insects are frequently found in or around homes and businesses while others stay away from humans. Today we will be taking a look at the wasp. The wasp is one of many insects that humans will most likely have interactions with at some point in their lives.

Where Do Wasps Live?

The scientific classification for the wasp is Hymenoptera Apocrita. Wasps made their first known appearance millions of years ago during the Jurassic period. Over the years tens of thousands of wasp species have been discovered. With the exception of the polar regions, wasps can be found in all parts of the world. Some wasps are social wasps and some wasps are solitary wasps. Wasps range in size up to 2 inches in length. While there are thousands of species of wasps, some are more common than others. The two most common types of wasps are the yellow jacket and the hornet. Since these two are the wasps that we will likely have the most encounters with, we are going to give you some more information on those two was species.

Yellow Jacket Wasp

The yellow jacket is a predatory social wasp found mostly in North America. Most yellow jackets are black and yellow but some are black and white and others have a red background on their abdomen instead of black. Due to their similarity in color, they are often confused with bees. There are a few physical differences between yellow jackets and bees if you dare get close enough to them to notice! The main difference between honey bees and yellow jackets is that yellow jackets don’t carry pollen. Similar to bees, yellow jackets only live in colonies and have a queen in their colony. When they fly they have a rapid, side-to-side flight pattern before landing. Female yellow jackets all have the capability of stinging.

Hornet Identification

Unlike yellow jackets, the hornet is not black and yellow. Lots of hornets are black and white but some can be brown and yellow as well. The tropics of Asia are where most wasps can be found. Hornets also have one queen per colony. They chew wood to make a papery pulp and use that to make their nests. Their nests are typically exposed in trees and shrubs. They aggressively guard their nests. Due to their aggression and their dangerous sting, hornets are often considered pests.

Wasp Prevention Tips; Preventing Wasps from Returning

So what you should you do if you find wasps in your home or place of business? First make sure that you keep food sources indoors, especially protein and sugar. Wasps love to feast on food that is left outside. One type of food that you do want to leave out is sliced cucumbers. There is an acid in cucumbers that wasps don’t like and they will leave you alone during your outdoor activities if you leave slices of cucumbers around. You also want to make sure that your outdoor garbage cans are tightly sealed. All of these suggestions are quick, cheap, easy ways to try and get rid of your wasps.
