How Common is Hantavirus in Deer Mice in Rio Rancho, NM? How to Prevent Rodents

Deer mice are fairly common throughout New Mexico. They have white feet and underbelly and are typically brown everywhere else. They scurry around on four feet that extend from their round-shaped body. These mice average 5-8 inches in length and are common across the U.S. Generally, deer mice emerge from their hiding places at dusk and dawn to feed on nuts, berries, seeds, insects and small fruit. Outdoors, deer mice will find shelter in hollow tree logs, piles of debris, and old fence posts. During the late fall, deer mice have a tendency to seek refuge from the harsh winter temperatures and infiltrate into houses, garages, sheds or rarely used vehicles to seek shelter. Once inside your home, they are more attracted to basements or attics and will build their nests stuffed furniture, storage boxes, drawers and wall voids.

Do All Deer Mice Carry Hantavirus?

Today, we at Bugman Pest Control of New Mexico bring up deer mice because of the potentially fatal Hantavirus transmitted from these mice by way of contact with infected mouse carcasses or breathing in urine droplets from the infected mouse. The Hantavirus is increasingly infecting people. Though rare and not all deer mice carry hantavirus, we feel people should be more vigilant when it comes to their pest control. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 728 cases of hantavirus infection in 36 states reported as of January of 2017, and 36% of these reported cases were fatal. In states west of the Mississippi River, more than 96% of the cases occurred. New Mexico had reported 109 cases, Colorado had 204 cases, and Kansas with 16.

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome Symptoms

Caused by hantavirus infection, the Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, or HPS evolved, and is still considered a rare, fatal respiratory disease. Typically, early symptoms include fever, fatigue, and muscle aches typically in the back, thigh, hips, and sometimes shoulders. According to the ADC, about half of the patients experienced dizziness, chills, headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. The deadly turn of the virus brings on fluid fills the lungs, causing coughing and shortness of breath.

How is Hantavirus Spread?

The CDC says that the primary risk of exposure is a rodent infestation in or around the house. In the United States, other rodents, other than deer mice, include that carry the hantavirus cotton rat, which is found in the southeastern United States, including most of Kansas and western Missouri; the semi-aquatic rice rat, which is commonly found in marshy areas in the southeastern United States; and the white-footed mouse, found in all but the western-most states.

What Other Diseases Do Rat & Mice Droppings Carry?

Not only are the growing cases of the Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, or HPS, increasing, but rodents are known for spreading other diseases, viruses, bacteria and germs, broadening the health risk. Additionally, rodents are notorious for damaging a building’s structure, electrical wiring and even plumbing as well as destroying possessions in an effort to forage for food, water, and nesting materials.
